DFPlayer Mini MP3 Player Module — TF Card and Serial Control

The DFPlayer Mini is a compact MP3 decoder that plays audio files from a micro SD card independently of a microcontroller, or under serial UART control from an Arduino or ESP32. Files are stored as numbered MP3 or WAV files on the SD card; the Arduino sends single-byte commands over software or hardware serial to play, pause, skip, or set volume. A built-in 3W mono amplifier drives a speaker directly without a separate amplifier board.

  • Plays MP3 and WAV files from micro SD card (up to 32GB)
  • UART control — play, stop, volume, track select via serial commands
  • Built-in 3W amplifier — drives 4–8 ohm speakers directly
  • Standalone mode — plays next track on button press without MCU
  • 3.2V–5V supply — compatible with Arduino and ESP32
  • Line-out pins — connects to external amplifier for higher power
Specification Value
Supported formats MP3, WAV
Storage Micro SD, FAT16/FAT32, up to 32GB
Amplifier power 3W (mono)
Speaker impedance 4 – 8 ohm
Control interface UART serial (9600 baud)
Supply voltage 3.2V – 5V
DAC output 24-bit, 8–48kHz sample rate

How do you play a specific track from Arduino?

Name files as 0001.mp3, 0002.mp3 etc. in the root of the SD card. Use SoftwareSerial on pins 10/11 and the DFRobotDFPlayerMini library from the Library Manager. Call myDFPlayer.play(1) to play track 1. The module responds with a serial acknowledge byte when the command is received.

Does the 3W amplifier output sound well enough for a small speaker?

Yes. At 5V supply, 3W into a 4-ohm 50mm speaker produces clearly audible audio for notifications, voice announcements, and short sound effects. For background music in a room-sized project, add an external 10W–30W amplifier board on the DAC line-out pins.

Best for

Arduino doorbell sound effects, voice announcement systems, haunted house audio triggers, robotics speech modules, alarm sound boards, interactive exhibit audio, retro arcade sound effects, and any project needing triggered audio playback without a Raspberry Pi.

Eva ★★★★★

Wired it into a little project to play greeting audio when motion is detected, and the serial control via the UART pins is surprisingly straightforward once you check the datasheet. The micro SD card handling picked up my files with zero fuss, and the tiny footprint leaves tons of room on the breadb

Adam ★★★★★

Spent an afternoon wiring this up to an Arduino and was surprised at how clear the audio sounds through a small speaker. The serial control is straightforward once you get the baud rate right, and it reads my micro SD cards without any formatting issues.

Hannah R. ★★★★★

The serial control makes it stupid easy to trigger tracks from my Arduino, just send the command and it plays instantly. Files go straight onto a micro SD card and it reads folders without any extra config. Speaker output is loud enough for my project box, no amp needed.
