TXS0108E 8-Channel Bidirectional Logic Level Converter — 3.3V to 5V

The TXS0108E from Texas Instruments is an 8-channel bidirectional level shifter that translates logic signals between 1.2V–3.6V (VCCA side) and 1.65V–5.5V (VCCB side) without direction control pins. Each channel auto-detects signal direction using internal circuitry, making it the cleanest solution for SPI, I2C, and UART buses between 3.3V MCUs and 5V peripherals where a manual direction control pin would complicate the design.

  • 8 independent channels — bidirectional, auto-direction detection
  • VCCA: 1.2V–3.6V (3.3V ESP32 or Raspberry Pi side)
  • VCCB: 1.65V–5.5V (5V Arduino or peripheral side)
  • No direction control pins — auto-sensing per channel
  • Up to 110Mbps data rate (push-pull mode)
  • SOIC-20 or DIP module
Specification Value
Chip TXS0108E (TI)
Channels 8, bidirectional
VCCA range 1.2V – 3.6V
VCCB range 1.65V – 5.5V
Data rate 110Mbps (push-pull) / 2Mbps (open-drain)

Does the TXS0108E work with I2C?

Yes, but with a caveat. The TXS0108E’s auto-direction detection requires a brief voltage transition to sense direction — I2C’s open-drain signals work correctly as long as pull-up resistors are fitted on both sides. Remove any high-value pull-ups and use 4.7k ohm on each side. For pure SPI (push-pull), the TXS0108E works cleanly without modification.

Best for

ESP32-to-Arduino 5V peripheral interfacing, 3.3V MCU to 5V LCD, 3.3V to 5V relay module control, mixed-voltage SPI buses, UART level shifting, and any 8-line interface crossing a 3.3V/5V boundary.

Timothy ★★★★★

I needed a reliable way to connect my 3.3V sensor array to a 5V Arduino, and the 8 bidirectional channels handled all of them without any signal drop. The tiny footprint fits perfectly on a breadboard, which saved me from a messy wiring mess.

Penelope ★★★★★

The 8 channels meant I could shift an entire sensor bus at once instead of juggling two converters, and the bidirectional auto-direction sensing saved me from wiring headaches. It handled the 3.3V to 5V handshake cleanly on my first try, though I did have to double-check the EN pin logic before it c

Hazel ★★★★★

Had to interface an old 5V GPS module with a 3.3V ESP32, and this chip handled the bidirectional shifting without any fuss. The 8 channels gave me plenty of room for data and control lines.
