Build your own pocket-sized sound effects generator with this compact DIY kit. Centred on the classic 9561 sound-generator IC, the BOX-16 produces 16 distinct analog sound effects — everything from doorbell chimes to alarm tones — all selectable through a simple 4-bit binary switch interface. No microcontroller, no firmware, just clean analog circuit design you assemble yourself.

How it works: The circuit is controlled by four binary inputs (A, B, C, D), giving 16 possible combinations and therefore 16 unique sounds. The design splits into two halves: a basic control circuit selects between four core sound types using two binary bits, while an additional control circuit modifies the oscillation parameters of the 9561 via switched resistors (R1, R2, R4, R5), changing the frequency and timbre to derive twelve further variations. Switches S1–S4 set the binary code manually, or external logic signals can drive the inputs for automated triggering.

Circuit breakdown:

  • Sound generation: 9561 IC + Q1 transistor driver + LS1 passive buzzer
  • Basic control: 2-bit binary selection between four core waveforms
  • Additional control: Switched-resistor network alters 9561 oscillation parameters
  • Binary encoder: S1–S4 with pull resistors R6–R9 for manual 4-bit input

Technical specifications:

  • Supply voltage: 4.5–5V DC
  • Board dimensions: 48 × 41 mm
  • Core IC: HD9561 sound generator
  • Control: Manual coding (onboard DIP-style switches) + external coding (logic-level input)
  • Sound output: Passive buzzer

Applications: Doorbell, alarm module, electronic toy, sound-effect prototyping, or a teaching project demonstrating how binary logic maps to analog output. Compact enough to drop into larger builds as a sound subsystem.

Note: This is a DIY kit — components only, requires assembly and soldering. Not a finished product.

Hazel N. ★★★★★

I was really impressed by how many distinct sound effects came out of such a small board — the laser blast and siren were my favorites. Took me about two hours to assemble with a basic iron, and it worked on the first try.

Lily C. ★★★★★

Soldering the kit was a fun evening project, and I was impressed by how clearly the 16 distinct sound effects come through the piezo speaker. The compact size makes it perfect for slipping into a pocket or attaching to a keychain.

Putting this together was surprisingly satisfying—the solder pads are well-labeled and easy to work with. Flipping through all 16 sounds on the switch, my favorite is definitely the laser blast. Works great for adding retro game vibes to my projects.
