Learn how to wire and use the XH-M164 4-channel stereo preamplifier tone board for volume, bass, and treble control in your audio projects.

Quick answer

The XH-M164 stereo preamplifier tone board lets you adjust volume, bass, and treble for up to four audio channels. Wire it between your source and amplifier, supply 12V DC, and connect speakers or line-level outputs.

What the XH-M164 does and what it doesn't

This board is a preamplifier, not a power amplifier. It processes line-level audio signals and gives you tone control before sending the signal to a separate amplifier. It cannot drive speakers directly.

The four channels let you control two stereo inputs or a surround setup, but each channel shares the same tone adjustment — you cannot set different bass or treble per channel.

Power supply requirements

The XH-M164 needs a stable 12V DC supply. Use a regulated power adapter rated at least 500mA. Unregulated supplies or lower voltages can cause hum, distortion, or unstable operation.

Reverse polarity will damage the board. Double-check your DC jack or screw terminal connections before powering on.

XH-M164 wiring and setup steps

  1. Connect the power supply: Attach a 12V DC regulated power supply to the board's DC input jack or screw terminals (marked VCC and GND). Use a center-positive barrel jack if using the DC jack. A common mistake is using an unregulated supply — this introduces 50/60 Hz hum into the audio.
  2. Wire audio inputs: Connect your audio source (phone, PC, DAC) to the input terminals. Each channel has L and GND (left/ground) or R and GND (right/ground) pads. Use shielded audio cable to reduce noise. Leaving input ground wires floating causes loud hum. Always connect both signal and ground for each channel.
  3. Wire audio outputs: Connect the output terminals to your power amplifier's line-level inputs. Match left and right channels correctly — swapping them will reverse stereo imaging. Do not connect the output directly to speakers. The board outputs line-level signal only.
  4. Adjust the trim pots: The board has small trim potentiometers (pots) for each channel. Use a small screwdriver to set the initial volume level per channel. Turn clockwise to increase gain. Setting trim pots too high can clip the signal and cause distortion even with the main volume low.
  5. Test and fine-tune: Power on the system, play audio at low volume, and turn the front-panel bass and treble knobs to verify control. Adjust trim pots if one channel is louder than others. If you hear no sound, check that all ground connections are secure and the power LED is lit.
